Sign on to oppose a federal balanced budget amendment

As agreed to in the debt limit deal struck this past summer, the U.S. House is expected to vote this week on a measure to add an amendment to our Constitution to require a balanced budget every year. A vote in the Senate is expected after Thanksgiving. A constitutional balanced budget amendment would threaten the U.S. economy, create serious problems for Social Security, and would likely force huge cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, the social-safety net and other vital government programs.

You can help make sure the measure is defeated by joining state and local organizations across the country in a sign-on letter organized by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

As the letter notes, a new analysis by the preeminent private economic forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers finds a balanced budget amendment would be "catastrophic" for the economy. Balancing the 2012 federal budget through spending cuts would result in a $1.5 trillion reduction in public investment, throwing 15 million people out of work and causing a severe economic contraction, the analysis found.

Please review the letter and then visit this website to sign on behalf of your organization.

The deadline for organizations to sign on is Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 8 a.m. Mountain. After Wednesday morning, the letter will remain open and any additional groups that sign-on will be included in a subsequent copy of the letter to be circulated to Senate members following the Thanksgiving recess.

If you want to take action but don't represent an organization, call your representative in the House and urge him or her to oppose a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Find contact information for your member of Congress at Project Vote Smart.
