NAACP Youth

The Aurora, CO Branch of the NAACP Youth Council is comprised of young people ages 12 to 21. Youth Council members engage their community through events that bring awareness to issues that affect young people of color.  Events such as: environmental and race forums, educational activities that teach history, and most recently members had the opportunity to co-author the “Aurora Police Department Youth Guide” (see the link below for the APD youth empowerment guide). Aurora Youth Council was acknowledged as an outstanding unit in the Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana State Conference by the National Youth and College Division in 2015.

In addition, to creating change in their community – members have fun! They participate every year in the MLK Rodeo, which also includes leading up to the rodeo learning about the Buffalo Soldiers, and an introduction to riding horses.  The youth council also visits the Denver Museum of Science, Black American West Museum and a yearly visit to the University of Colorado Denver (CU-Denver) Campus where they are greeted by students, staff, and faculty. The program at CU-Denver includes a presentation on how to succeed in school, career planning, and a tour of the campus.

Lastly, council members gain a sense of community as they learn about civil rights. They are able to gain leadership experience, enhance their public speaking skills, and understand the value of community service.  This group has a wealth of resources from community leaders who want to ensure that members are successful.  New memberships and returning memberships are always welcome!
